- Remove all petrol and oil from lawn mower, whipper snipper, etc
- Pack heavy items on the bottom
- Always pack the items you need at the front of the storage unit where they can be easily accessed
- Use good quality packing boxes as they are of uniform size, hold the weight and are easier to stack
- Wrap breakables in bubble-wrap and mark them "fragile"
- Fridges, freezers and other white goods should be clean and dry before storing, with a deodoriser inside for freshness. Leave doors slightly ajar.
- Remove batteries from all toys and equipment as leaking batteries can permanently damage items
- Stack books flat (not on their spines)
- Plates and crockery should be individually wrapped in white paper. Fill all gaps with wrapping paper or bubble-wrap
- Dissemble beds and other furniture where possible to make for easier lifting and storing
- Vacuum and clean upholstery and rugs prior to storage
